How to size a SUP paddle (and why we cut them in the shop)

Surf short, cruise long, and stop copying the guy at the boat ramp. A practical guide to blade size, shaft length and the 6–10 inch rule.
Paddle length is the cheapest performance change available to a paddler, and the one most people get wrong. Here's how we do it on the shop floor.
Start with the discipline, not your height
Height matters, but what you're doing with the paddle matters more. Roughly, we start at 6–8 inches over your height for SUP surfing, 8–10 inches over for all-around and flat-water cruising, and 10–12 inches over for racing and touring where a taller stack helps a longer, more vertical stroke.
Surf shorter. A shorter shaft keeps the blade closer to the rail on a bottom turn and stops you levering yourself off balance when the board is on edge.
Then pick the blade by weight, not ego
A bigger blade is not a faster blade. Blade area should match the power you can put down repeatedly without wrecking your shoulder. As a rough guide, riders under 145 lb are usually happiest on 76–82 sq in, 145–180 lb on 82–90 sq in, and heavier riders on 90 sq in and up. Racers trend smaller than you'd expect because cadence beats brute force over distance.
Foiling is the exception: foil blades are deliberately upsized and shortened, so pick by weight from the foil-specific range rather than mapping your surf blade across.
Fixed vs adjustable
A fixed paddle is lighter, stiffer and transmits everything you put into it. An adjustable is the right answer for a household with more than one paddler, for travel, or for anyone still figuring out their stroke. There is no shame in an adjustable — there is real cost in a fixed paddle cut to the wrong length.
Why we cut in the shop
Because a paddle that's an inch too long is a paddle you fight for the rest of its life. Buy a fixed shaft from us and we'll put you on a board, watch you paddle, and cut it here — included in the price, and not something a shipping box can do for you.
